When pressed about his future and whether he would be in charge for the upcoming clash against fierce rivals Arsenal, Frank expressed his certainty: "Yeah, I am convinced I will be." He acknowledged the understandable frustration but emphasized that the responsibility for the team's current predicament isn't solely on his shoulders. "It is easy to point on me but it is never only the head coach, ownership, players or staff. It is everyone." He added that the entire team is aware of their current standing and is working diligently to implement improvements.
But here's where it gets controversial... The atmosphere at the stadium was palpably tense. Frank's name was met with boos before the match even began, and this sentiment intensified as the game progressed, with audible chants of "you're getting sacked in the morning" and "we want Frank out" echoing through the stands. The manager himself was heavily booed as he walked onto the pitch after the final whistle.
Frank, however, remains understanding of the fans' emotions: "I understand the fans' frustration." He elaborated that this is not the position anyone at the club desires and that the team is dedicating immense effort to turn things around. He also admitted that he didn't anticipate being in this position, especially with 11 to 12 players currently sidelined with injuries. "There are a few before me up here at Tottenham and many other clubs that have lost their head. I have to stay calm. We have to get through this together."
Interestingly, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, who also faced pressure heading into the match, voiced his support for Frank. Howe expressed his hope that Tottenham would grant Frank the necessary time to demonstrate his capabilities. "I think he's an outstanding manager, I've come up against him many times. I think he's got all the attributes to be a top manager for this football club and I hope he gets the time to show that." Howe acknowledged the significant challenge posed by Tottenham's extensive injury list, describing it as an "incredible list of players that they're missing" and a "really, really difficult" situation for Frank.
And this is the part most people miss... Former Tottenham defender Michael Dawson painted a stark picture of the escalating situation, describing the atmosphere as "toxic." He urged the Tottenham hierarchy to make a clear statement of support for Frank or to make a decisive move. "The Spurs hierachy need to come out now and say either we are backing Thomas Frank or he goes." Dawson noted the players' apparent lack of confidence and their deep defensive stance, even in home games, which he found "quite remarkable." He lamented the lack of attacking intent, stating, "You've got to get up the field. You are at home and the fans pay their money and they want to see entertainment." While acknowledging the team's comeback in the second half, he observed that they reverted to a deep defensive posture after equalizing, allowing Newcastle to regain control. With 11 league defeats this season, the pressure on Frank is undoubtedly mounting.
