The National Rugby League (NRL) is eyeing Las Vegas as its anchor site and plans for expansion to more U.S. cities. According to Nicolussi & Barrett of the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, NRL Chair Peter V'landys has confirmed that Las Vegas will remain a league destination beyond 2028. The NRL is making its annual visit to Las Vegas for a rugby event that includes two league matches. V'landys stated, 'Vegas will always be the anchor event, we're here for the long haul -- as long as we get the revenues, we'll be here.'
However, the NRL is struggling to make an impact on the U.S. market and has not yet tapped the country's wagering rivers of gold. Despite this, the league is charging ahead with ambitious plans to start next season with more games around the globe. V'landys acknowledges that it has been harder than expected, but the NRL is determined to continue its international expansion. The NRL is considering a plan to open the entire season in foreign locations next year, including Japan and the Middle East. Some clubs have privately expressed concerns about it diluting the interest in Vegas.
The NRL Fan Fest in downtown Las Vegas drew around 16,000 fans just 48 hours out from the games at Allegiant Stadium, according to Meyn & Kdouh of THE AUSTRALIAN. V'landys noted that there are 20,000 Aussies in Vegas and they've taken over the city. However, subscriptions to the league's Watch NRL app have skyrocketed, doubling since the first Vegas matches in 2024, and are up 67% in the last year. The NRL is optimistic about its future in the U.S. and is committed to its long-term vision of taking the game to international markets.
