After a grueling year of absence, Jordan Abdull has triumphantly returned to the rugby league scene, sparking excitement and anticipation among fans. But what does this comeback mean for Abdull and his new team, the Widnes Vikings?
Following a lengthy absence of over a year, playmaker Jordan Abdull made his much-anticipated return to the field on Friday night. Allan Coleman, the coach of the Widnes Vikings, is optimistic about Abdull's future, predicting continuous improvement from the team's new recruit. Abdull, now part of the Championship side Widnes for the 2026 season, played for 60 minutes in a pre-season match at The Halliwell Jones Stadium against local rivals Warrington Wolves.
Despite Warrington Wolves, a Super League team, winning with a score of 50-12, the game was a significant milestone for Abdull. It marked his first appearance since September 14, 2024, when he played for Catalans Dragons against London Broncos. This game concluded his loan period with Catalans, and he had initially planned to rejoin Hull FC permanently for the 2025 season. However, due to injury and fitness concerns, the 29-year-old was released by Hull FC before he could even play a game for them. His return to the field has been a long and challenging journey over the past 12 months.
Abdull, who will turn 30 next month, is approaching 200 senior career appearances. He has previously played for Hull FC, Doncaster, Featherstone Rovers, Hull KR, London Broncos, and Catalans.
Reflecting on Abdull's unofficial debut for the Vikings in the friendly against Warrington, Coach Coleman expressed his satisfaction: "I was really happy with him for his first game." He further added, "He looked like he was enjoying it, which is a big thing for him. If he can enjoy his rugby, he’ll just get better and better. 100% he will." Coleman also noted Abdull's attempts and efforts, stating, "He tried some things, some things didn’t come off, he took quite a bit of ball up to line as well. They had to stop him and he’ll get sharper just doing that." Coleman also highlighted the team's initial sharpness with Abdull and Joe Lyons, especially in the first 15-20 minutes.

The Widnes Vikings are set to kick off their 2026 Championship campaign next Sunday, January 18, with a match against the title favorites, London Broncos. Coach Coleman is pleased with Abdull's performance, noting his movement and contribution to the team's strategy.
