Imagine cycling from Cheshire to Thailand – a journey of epic proportions! Olly Hargreaves, a brave bikepacker, embarked on this incredible adventure, only to face an unexpected twist just before reaching his final destination. This is his story of perseverance, adventure, and a touch of misfortune.
Inspired by his father's own daring cycle from the UK to Australia in the 1980s, Olly set off on his epic journey. His father's tales of navigating a world without mobile phones or readily available maps ignited Olly's wanderlust. He began his trip in April, covering vast distances across Europe, Central Asia, and the Himalayas. Along the way, he raised over £2,000 for Alzheimer's Research UK, turning his personal quest into a charitable endeavor.
His journey began with a cycle across Europe, passing through France, Germany, Austria, and Croatia. He teamed up with a friend in Montenegro, and together they explored Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Greece, and Turkey. In Turkey, they encountered a unique challenge: aggressive dogs.
"We had some wild dog chases in Turkey. On the first day there was a ginormous Kangal dog that went for us."

After cycling through central Turkey, Olly's girlfriend, Ellie, joined him in Cappadocia for a week, marking the first time he stayed in a hotel during his trip. When the border with Azerbaijan was closed, he took a flight to Kazakhstan and a train to Uzbekistan. In August, he cycled through Afghanistan and surprised his father in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. They then cycled together along the Pamir Highway for three weeks until his father had to return home due to a medical condition.
Olly then traveled to Kyrgyzstan, where he met up with friends and together they cycled through Kyrgyzstan up to Almaty, enduring freezing temperatures. They then flew to New Delhi, India, where they were involved in several accidents.
"It's a mad country to cycle through. We ended up with a tally chart of who'd been crashed into and by what. I got hit by three mopeds and a tuk-tuk while we were there."
Continuing through Nepal, they had to be mindful of tigers, elephants, and rhinos. They reached Pokhara, where they were to begin the Annapurna Circuit. But here's where it gets controversial... Olly's journey took an unexpected turn when he broke his collarbone, just days before he was due to finish. His mother came to meet him in Pokhara, and they spent five days in the hospital. This injury meant that their trekking plans were put on hold.
Olly flew to Bangkok on December 1st to reunite with Ellie, and the couple then traveled through northern Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia.
"It feels great to look back on how far I've come, we had a good time despite what happened."
And this is the part most people miss... Despite the setback, Olly's spirit remained unbroken. He embraced the unexpected turn of events, turning a potential disappointment into a memorable part of his adventure.
