A$AP Rocky's New Album: A Charismatic Comeback with 'Don't Be Dumb' (2026)

A$AP Rocky's Charismatic Comeback: A Review of 'Don't Be Dumb'

It's been a long eight years since A$AP Rocky, the self-proclaimed 'king of New York rap', last graced us with a full-length album. In an industry as fast-paced as hip-hop, where even the biggest stars release multiple albums annually, this hiatus feels like an eternity. During this time, the music landscape has shifted dramatically, with artists like Rocky's collaborator Tyler, the Creator, dropping multiple projects and exploring new sounds.

But Rocky hasn't been idle. He's been a fixture in the press, thanks to his high-profile relationship with pop icon Rihanna and their growing family. He's also made headlines for his legal troubles, facing charges for firing a gun at a former friend, which could have landed him behind bars for 24 years. Thankfully, he was acquitted, and he's even found success as an actor, starring alongside Rose Byrne and Denzel Washington in acclaimed films.

Musically, Rocky has been sporadic, releasing a few singles here and there, including the Tame Impala collaboration 'Sundress'. His last album, 'Testing' (2018), divided critics and fans, lacking the energy and charm of his earlier work. It left Rocky at a crossroads: Should he continue experimenting or return to his roots?

'Don't Be Dumb', Rocky's fourth studio album, attempts to do both. Despite its lengthy runtime, the album feels energetic and concise, ditching the experimental elements of 'Testing' and recapturing the fiery spirit of his breakthrough album, 'Long.Live.A$AP'. However, it's not without its flaws. Some tracks feel rushed, and others are overproduced, making an edit seem necessary. But the album is cohesive and enjoyable, with a diverse guest list that includes Hans Zimmer, Tyler, the Creator, and indie folk artist Jessica Pratt. Rocky remains the star, and his presence alone makes the album worth experiencing.

Rocky's charisma is on full display. 'Stole Ya Flow', a supposed diss track aimed at Drake, is a highlight, with Rocky delivering the lines with playful mischief: "N***** gettin' BBLs / Lucky we don't body shame." On 'Playa', he adopts an almost paternal tone, offering advice to young lovers, albeit with a unique twist: "No receipts, don't text." 'Air Force (Black Demarco)' sees Rocky rap over a harsh, glitchy beat, reminiscent of Playboi Carti, before transitioning into a stoned, psychedelic rock vibe, almost like a playful jab at those who criticized 'Testing'.

While these moments shine, there are also lyrics that feel lazy and uninspired. On 'Helicopter', Rocky's observation about people's desire for 'blue checks' on X feels more like a reminder of his new role as a father than a profound statement. Later, on 'Whiskey' with Gorillaz, his lyrics veer into incoherent free association, threatening to derail the track. Thankfully, these weaker sections are outnumbered by the album's brighter moments, making 'Don't Be Dumb' Rocky's strongest release since his debut. It's a playful and enjoyable return to form, offering a breath of fresh air for fans who were left disappointed by 'Testing'.

So, is 'Don't Be Dumb' a slam dunk? Perhaps not, but it's a solid step in the right direction. What do you think? Does Rocky's latest effort live up to the hype, or is it just a mediocre comeback? Let's discuss in the comments!
